Sexual abuse by a person of authority in an institution is a serious matter of massive proportions in America. Recently, the office of the Attorney General of Pennsylvania announced that it is investigating Pennsylvania’s Catholic Church clergy for decades of covering up sexual abuse. Pennsylvania is not alone. Attorneys General are looking into clergy sexual abuse allegations and potential cover-ups in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Vermont.
Unfortunately, the problem of clergy sexual abuse affects more than just thirteen states. Thousands of people nationwide have reported abuse by clergy.
Just as the problem is not limited to thirteen states, the Catholic Church is not the only institution where these types of crimes have occurred and then been covered up. Officials have found systematic cover-ups by other institutions as well, including schools and in workplace environments.
