In January 2019, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan made serious allegations regarding priests accused of sexual abuse throughout the state. Madigan said her investigators had uncovered at least 500 accusations, compared to only 185 cases the Church admitted knowing about.

In January 2019, for example, the Evanston Board of Education approved payment of a $100,000 settlement for four former students who accused a former drama teacher of sexual abuse. The teacher worked at Evanston Township High School from 1965 to 1999.

That same month, a teacher at Reed-Custer High School in Will County was charged with having sexual relations with a 14-year-old boy. The teacher was charged with aggravated sexual abuse.
