Articles on priests accused of sexual abuse have dominated headlines in New Jersey. It seems that almost every day there are stories involving the name of a priest, or other official, accused of this terrible crime. Unfortunately, there are far too many examples of someone in a position of trust or authority who has taken advantage of innocent children or adults.
It can take years of specialized counseling to help a victim deal with the effects of child sexual abuse. No matter what age a victim may be, however, this is a life-changing trauma. When a respected, trusted institution employs someone who commits this kind of act, that institution must be held accountable for its actions. In January 2019, a New Jersey priest was arrested on sexual abuse charges that stretched back nearly three decades. The 63-year-old clergy member was charged with aggravated sexual abuse as well as sexual assault. According to prosecutors, the victim of the assault was a child who was abused between the ages of 14 and 17. The alleged assaults occurred between 1990 and 1994. The priest admitted to investigators that he had sex with the victim multiple times.
In a separate case, the Catholic Church paid a $400,000 settlement to five people who said they suffered abuse at the hands of a priest during the 1980s and 1990s. The priest accused of the abuse served at churches in Montclair and Guttenberg during this time period. The five Catholic dioceses in New Jersey have paid an estimated $50 million in settlements to victims of sexual abuse committed by clergy members.
