What is Child Sexual Abuse?

It can be difficult to determine how to define sexual abuse. This is apparent in the many ways that different states do just that. You would think that laws across the nation would be consistent, but there are actually many different answers to questions such as, “What does sexually abused mean?”

In Vermont, child sexual abuse is defined as the molestation or exploitation of a child. This includes not only sexual contact but several other behaviors as well. These are just a few.

  • Prostitution
  • Incest
  • Lewd and lascivious conduct
  • Possessing or viewing child pornography
  • Voyeurism

Sexual Abuse Claim’s attorneys have experience representing victims in these kinds of cases.

Priests Accused of Sexual Abuse

Vermont is not immune to the scandal involving Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse of kids. In January 2019, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington identified more than 50 priests who had been accused.

A man sued the diocese in December 2018, alleging that a priest at a Milton, VT church sexually abused him in the late 1970s and 1980s. At the time, the plaintiff in the lawsuit was an altar boy. Several other victims accused the priest of abuse, and the diocese settled several complaints in the early 2000s.
